It is generally well-understood that a client base is required in order to develop and maintain such advanced expertise. The rare prevalence of children aged 0 to 18 years, who require communication aids, calls for the concentration of ultra-specialized consultation services in pediatric rehabilitation.
Due to the demographical decline reported by the Institut de la Statistique du Québec in 2003, it is necessary to reiterate the importance of amalgamating services intended for children with very complex problems so they that have access to services of the highest quality. Since the number of cases is not expected to increase, we must, therefore, gather these clients together in order to obtain a critical mass and to provide such specialized pediatric services. This must continue to be a focal concern for the health and social services community.
